I’m never disappointed. Go with me and I’ll show you what’s new this season. The Briar Patch is located on Stratford Road in Winston Salem, NC.

Watch for me on Garden World Report facebook page. I’ll show more of The Briar Patch Christmas Open House and there will be a show about the shoebox delivery for Operation Christmas Child. We garden bloggers have made over 20 boxes!!!

Capsicum annuum ‘Black Pearl’ ornamental pepper

Ornamental peppers and mumsThe Briar Patch Garden Center in Winston Salem, NC had an open house for their new location this past weekend. This garden center was started in 1999 by Damien and Deidra Johns, the owners, and they have worked almost around the clock while reaping the rewards of their efforts. Yesterday as they opened a second location in Advance, NC—I spotted the ornamental peppers placed so nicely with the beautiful mum.

Black Pearl Ornamental Pepper Look at that red pepper which ripens to this rich red as the plant matures. This is

Capsicum annuum ‘Black Pearl’ and you can read about it HERE. Ornamental peppers seem to be popular this year and I’ve noticed them popping up in annual flower beds.

Black Pearl ornamental pepperThey do work well at the front of a border reaching 20″ in height and width. The are considered annuals and even start well from seed. They aren’t picky needing little fertilizer and are somewhat drought tolerant.

This isn’t a new cultivar and has been around since 2006. It’s my experience that plants take awhile to catch on and I’m convinced this will become a landscape favorite.

MumsNo peppers in the picture above but isn’t it beautiful? The open house was a big hit and I’m so happy for Damien and Deidra.

Growing in front of the Prairie Conflowers

Muhly grass and Prairie coneflowers

In case you didn’t notice, I like flowers. I especially like flowers when they sing in harmony with what is growing around them. Here you see Muhly grass and Prairie coneflowers together.

Muhly grass and Prairie coneflower

Way back in the forgotten days, I used to be frustrated with my little Kodak Instamatic. I just knew there could be more detail and magical shots. I fell in love with photography when I was 16. There was a purple thistle growing in the meadow beside my house. I took a picture of it with that simple camera and then got the film developed at the local drugstore.

Muhly grass and coneflowers

The photo turned out pretty good but I was disappointed in the lack of detail. And today, I still have a Kodak but it’s more advanced and takes clear photos but you know…..you can always do better. If I could afford it…..I would go back to school and be a photographer because of moments when you find Muhly grass growing in front of coneflowers.

This set of pictures is part of a card series called…..Hidden Potential

My Garden Center Commercial

My commercial airs tomorrow. I’m so excited about having this new opportunity. One of the air times is during the Martha Stewart show and Paula Deen. It airs three times in the morning and then at random times from there on. I’ve got the DVD recorder set to record my first professional moment on television. ( The original piece is in better quality)

I can see lots of ways to improve it already. My part was to take the pictures, write the script, and I created all the text advertising. Deidre came over to my house and sat down with me to show what she wanted on each page.

A professional reader read my script but I may do the voiceovers in the future. I created this commercial on my Mac using Imovie, Powerpoint, Garage Band, and Iphoto. I’ve had a few request recently to do more as it saves the customer a good deal of money.

I get better each time I make one. The customer gets to take the final podcast and have it aired in the television time slots they have purchased. I can cut production time in half at least.

The Briar Patch is going in to their fresh produce phase of the season. They want the people of our community to know they carry gourmet foods along with home and garden decor. I buy from them on a regular basis. They have the best strawberries and strawberry cake I’ve ever eaten.

I’d like to do a live podcast for this garden center for their next commercial. I certainly do hope it gives the attention they so much deserve. I see too that they are having a big sale with the launch of the commercial. I’ll have to go add that to their website that I maintain for them.

Let me know what you think. I can use some constructive criticism for my next project.
