Elvis Had More Than One Chick Admirer

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/84/Graceland_front.jpg

Did Elvis sing to the chickens? I would lay an egg if he sang to me. In fact, I might lay two. He did have chickens at Graceland and you know cock-a-doodle doo is good for the garden. Do you reckon they left bird spatterings on his cadillac? Who can keep a chicken in the pen all day? Probably not Elvis because he was gentle and kind. He more than likely consulted with his parents and gave each of those chickens a name.

When Elvis was a little boy, he promised his parents a big home. He kept his promise and they lived at Graceland from 1957 until they passed. Today, Graceland is open for tours. You can go and walk where Elvis’ chickens walked.

He bought his home in 1957 from a church. The YWCA had already bought it but Elvis made a deal that couldn’t be refused. Elvis was a decorator and that is obvious from all the pictures on the internet. Graceland is painted blue and gold which makes it glow at night. The bright lights probably made the chickens mad.  The grounds are stunning and well manicured. I would imagine his parents had  a great deal to do with the vegetation on the property. They were avid gardeners. Elvis built a meditation garden honoring the Lord and all God had given him.It is said there isn’t a person in Memphis, Tennessee then or now who has heard a negative stoy about Elvis. He was good to everybody and especially his parents and grandma.

The Meditation Garden, as it is called, is where his parents, twin brother, grandmother, and Elvis would be buried.  Their graves are located in a circle around a fountain which is the focal point of the Meditation garden.

Two famous gardens at Graceland were the Meditation garden and the vegetable garden. The Meditation garden was constructed between 1964 and 1965. The other was the vegetable garden put in by Gladys and Vernon Presley. Elvis loved his mother best and wouldn’t deny her a single thing. Can you imagine what kind of vegetable garden we could build if money weren’t an option?

His parents built the chicken coop where I bet the roosters crowed and made Elvis mad.  Who shoveled Elvis’ chicken poo? Was it his mom? It’s not clear on that fact.

Having Chickens at Graceland means that Elvis had more than one variety of chick admiring him.Young ladies use to sit outside the gates hoping for a glimpse of Elvis. They didn’t know that he had secret cameras hidden. When a girl came along who caught Elvis’ eye, he would open the gate and show her the garden and around the house. The other chicks probably got jealous.

Here is his famous vegetable soup recipe prepared for him by his favorite cook, Mary Jenkins. He usually ate supper around 9pm. That’s evidence that he didn’t go to bed with the chickens.

ELVIS PRESLEY’S HOMEMADE VEGETABLE SOUP

  • 1 large can whole tomatoes
  • 2 pounds fresh stew meat
  • 1 cup chopped bell pepper
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 5 pieces of garlic, finely chopped
  • 2 boxes frozen mixed vegetables
  • 2 cups diced white potatoes
  • 1 can cream style corn
  • 1/2 cup okra
  • 1/2 cup catsup
  • 2 Tbsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp black pepper

Cook together meat, onion, celery, bell pepper, garlic, and tomatoes in a large stock pot over medium heat for 30 minutes, stirring frequently. Add mixed vegetables and cook for another 1/2 hour. Then mix in corn, potatoes, okra, catsup, salt, and pepper. Cook for 30 minutes longer or until the potatoes are tender. Serve.

George and I just watched an Elvis special. I often wonder what and where he would be if he had lived. I think of Johnny Cash, the end of his life was not so good either. Sad as it is, Elvis will be forever remembered because of his early death. Great post!
That is assuming Elvis is dead. Some crazy old coots around here think he may be living and walking in a crowd somewhere unawares. He was going to destroy himself so God took him home. It must be hard to be super talented. What happens to those people’s minds? How come it’s too much for them?

Fascinating post. I’m not particularly a fan but what a complex personality he was. That is one rich soup.
I didn’t become a fan of his until recently and mostly because he did do so many nice things for people.
